The Story of the Flower Promise
Once, there were two brothers, Ganesha and Kartikeya, sons of Shiva and Parvati. One day, their parents offered a challenge: whoever circled the world first would win a special fruit. Kartikeya leapt onto his peacock and sped off to race around the earth. Ganesha, clever and calm, simply circled his parents, saying they were his whole world. Shiva and Parvati smiled at Ganesha’s wisdom and gave him the fruit. Kartikeya returned, upset at losing, and left home in anger. He settled on a hill far away. Parvati missed her son and went to him, turning into Mallika (jasmine) flowers to comfort him. Shiva followed, becoming a Jyotirlinga beside her. Together, they became Mallikarjuna—Mallika for Parvati, Arjuna for Shiva.

A Long History
The temple dates back thousands of years, with mentions in ancient texts like the Mahabharata. It was built and expanded by kings over time, including the Satavahanas and Vijayanagara rulers.
