The Story of the Widow’s Faith
Long ago, there was a woman named Sudeha who lived happily with her husband until she grew sad—she couldn’t have a child. She begged her sister Ghushma to pray to Shiva for her. Ghushma was kind and made 101 clay Lingams, worshipping them by a lake every day. Shiva was touched by her devotion and blessed her with a son. Sudeha got jealous, thinking the boy should’ve been hers. In a fit of rage, she killed Ghushma’s son and threw him into the lake. Ghushma found out but didn’t curse her sister. Instead, she kept praying, tears in her eyes. Shiva saw her pure heart and appeared as a Jyotirlinga. With a miracle, he brought her son back to life. The people named him Grishneshwar, the Lord of Compassion, a healer of pain.

A Long History
The temple’s tale goes back centuries, mentioned in the Shiva Purana. The current red-stone structure was built in the 18th century by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, with older roots from the 13th century under the Yadava kings. Its carvings and domes show off its past.
